General questions about
websites, blogs & WordPress

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a Content Management System (CMS) and blogging platform. It's free, open source software, suitable for many types of website, small and big. WordPress is user-friendly, intuitive, easy, quick to setup, a CMS and blog all in one. WordPress is one of the most popular systems for running your own website. It has a great community of users, many addons, and it's very flexible.

What is a domain name?

Think of it as the address of your website. When someone wants to visit you, you tell them where you live by giving them your address. Like you have an address, your site also has one. But instead of a postal address it's something like

Domain names are "bought" at domain registrars. Hosting companies often also offer domain name registration, but avoid this. It's best to register your domain name with a reputable domain registration company, keeping your hosting and domain separate. For more info on this, see our free domain name e-book.

What is hosting?

You can think of hosting as the place where your website lives. Like you live in a house, your website lives on a server (which is a powerful computer that's always on). When someone visits your site, they request the files that make up your pages from the server. The server sends these files to their browser, which then displays the website.

There are lots of hosting companies out there and choosing one can be a bit of a minefield. At the cheaper end you'd expect to pay around €5 a month, but you may experience slower loading times or your website may be unavailable for short periods of time. Also, take into consideration the quality of a hosting company's customer service, which you may need to be in touch with sometimes. There is also more expensive hosting available that gives excellent performance in terms of site speed and up time, starting from €20 per month. However, for most websites with normal traffic volumes it is not necessary to pay that much for your hosting.

When you buy one of our themes, we can take care of the hosting for you for a fee of €10 per month. With our hosting package we aim to strike a balance. Good quality hosting with excellent up time and speed for an affordable price. Moreover, if you buy a WordPress Theme & Set-up Package from us, you receive a welcome gift of 12 months free hosting from us! And we'll set your site up for you, quickly and worry free.

What's the difference between a blog and a website?

A blog is used for posting generally article-like content in a time-chronological order. So when you publish a new post, the previous post is pushed down the timeline. Over time (depending on how much you post) content sinks deeper into the blog and then at some point usually is available only through archives and search. You can think of it as a magazine/newspaper where regularly there's new content that replaces older content.

A website is used to publish more static, timeless content... about us, contact, what we do, portfolio, homepage, products, etc.

You can use WordPress both as a blog and a website (both at the same time or one without the other). Our themes work regardless of how you choose to use your site.

What is the difference between a blog and a website set up with a theme by websites with a heart? is similar to, another weblog publishing tool - intended mainly for blogging, although you can also have static pages. With you are limited in what you can do and how it can look by what offers. Also, if you have a site, they may place advertising on your pages.

Websites with Heart Themes run on a Content Management System. This is the software that's also used on sites, only with complete freedom to do what you want. A WordPress theme is the skin/style/look of your site. You're free to choose whichever theme you prefer and to add whichever functionality you like, for example through the many free plugins.

Next to that our Divine Website pack includes the Divi Visual Page Builder, amazing technology that lets you edit and create your website right in front of your eyes!

If you currently have a blog or website, we can convert it to a blog or website so that you can use any of our themes.

Can I change my existing blog or blogger blog to a website set up by websites with a heart with one of your themes?

Questions about our Themes

What is a Plugin and can I install them on my website?

Plugins provide additional functionality not built into WordPress as standard. So by installing a plugin you can do additional things with your site that you otherwise couldn't. There are plugins for almost everything, think of newsletter subscriptions, related posts, search engine optimization, contact forms, etc.

Some words of warning:
1. Too many plugins slow down your site, so keep it reasonable
2. Some plugins are great, but some are not so great - we know some really nice ones and regularly write about them on our blog. If you're considering different plugins from the ones we recommend, please make sure you research them first.
3. Some plugins may conflict with each other or even your theme.

As part of our Divine Website Pack we install our Magic Plugin Pack, a great combination of the best plugins that keep your site safe and sound!

What is a responsive website?

People look at websites on different devices with different sizes (PC, laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc.). Some screens are big, others small. A responsive site detects the screen-size someone is using to look at your site and responds accordingly. If they have a big screen they see the site full-width (as there is a lot of space). If they have a small screen the site re-sizes itself to fit that screen and still remain pleasant to browse through. In short: a responsive website automatically adjusts to fit the device someone uses to view it with.

A website created with our Divine Website Pack is responsive out o the box, and offers some great tools to tweak and customize the look of your site for any device!

Can I add a shop to my website?

Yes, with WordPress you can do almost anything you like, including turning your site into a shop. There are special shop-plugins you can use for this. A good free one is Woocommerce. However, do keep in mind that some additional work might be needed to make sure the shop has the same style & look as the rest of your website. Contact us for more info on adding a shop to your WordPress website.

Do your themes work on the latest version of WordPress?

Yes, our themes are up-to-date with the latest WordPress version and we recommend you keep your WordPress version up to date.

Are your Themes updated?

Yes, we keep them up to date with the latest version of WordPress and from time to time we may also release bug-fixes, enhancements or additional features. If you've bought one of our themes you will keep access to all updates for that theme.

Can I use your themes for my site?

No, restricts what you can do and installing themes and plugins is not one of the things they support. Our themes are for self-hosted WordPress websites. However, it is possible to convert your site to a self-hosted WordPress website, so that you can use one of our themes. Contact us for more information.

Are the photos and text shown on the demo site included in the Theme?

No, they are example content to give you an idea what your site could look like with this theme. You'd provide your own text and photos (content), but they would be styled the way you see in the demo. We do install our themes with standard beautiful dummy content consisting of dummy text and our own free images that help you to get started and that you can replace with your own (or keep!).

Do the themes you sell include the fonts?

Our themes have full Google fonts functionality built in, which means you can use any Google font.

Is it possible to change the fonts in your themes?

Yes, for most of our themes it is possible to choose from hundreds of Google fonts. We have often designed the theme with a particular font in mind, and this is how we present the theme, but you can change the base font of the text and the header and menu font.

Yes, you can 🙂

Can your themes work like a blog so that I can display my blog posts on my homepage?

Yes, that's possible 🙂

Is it possible to show the full blog post and/or just a short summary?

Both are possible, you can change between short summaries or full posts by changing the settings in your Blog roll module.

I have another question...

Please get in touch, we'd love to hear from you and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
